From the moment Bruno Mars introduced new single '24K Magic' it was obvious to everyone listening, and even those who still are yet to hear the song but have seen the coverage he's getting online and via social media, that we're now guests in Bruno Mars' world for the next year... at least.
When it comes to music what Bruno Mars says, goes. He has the power to influence the direction of the next wave of music in the commercial market, even if it's not what the industry would consider commercial. Drawing inspiration from classic funk and soul bands and artists like Isaac Hayes, George Clinton, Brick, Kool & the Gang, Sly & the Family Stone, The Gap Band, Zapp, Funkadelic, Cameo, Chic, and so many more, after kickstarting a funk revival with the release of 'Uptown Funk' a few years ago, he's done it again with '24K Magic'.
Performing the song this weekend on Saturday Night Live, he part recreated the song's video emerging from backstage and having a camera follow him and his crew while they danced and sung the song all the way to the SNL stage.
Aside from this he also debuted a new song. Titled 'Chunky', the ode to women whose body offers a little extra thickness in certain areas, the funk influence is once again undeniable. Is this direction in which his new album is heading in its entirety? If it is then Bruno Mars deserves a pat on the back and a number one album spot. This is that feel-good music. It's refreshing to see a top flight artist use their platform to promote music that touches the soul and urges the feet to be more than just something used to lean up against a wall in the club.
Watch the videos below and be on the look out for Bruno Mars' new album, also called 24K Magic, out November 18th.
