While browsing your Spotify Free or Premium web player, have you ever wondered what is the most played song on the Spotify app or on other people’s playlists?
Surprisingly enough it’s not an old classic like Led Zep’s 'Stairway To Heaven' or even a contemporary tune such as Ed Sheeran’s 'Thinking Out Loud'. It’s not even a Michael Jackson track.
In fact it’s a song that’s not even reached the top of the UK or US charts and, in a triumph for indie labels everywhere, wasn’t even released by a major label.
'Lean On' by Major Lazer and DJ Snake (with MØ) was released on Mad Decent in the US and Because Music in Europe and has been streamed a whopping 526m times since its release earlier this year.
The song was recorded by Major Lazer only after it was turned down by both Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.
Major Lazer’s Diplo explained earlier this year, "We wrote this song with MØ very early from an instrumental Jr Blender created in some sessions in Trinidad. It was a strong hook. We’re super proud of this song."
