Neil Peart, the drummer from Canadian rock band Rush, has spoken candidly of his plans to retire from music all together. His latest comments appeared in an essay he wrote for the November/December 2015 edition of Drumhead magazine.
Peart also reflected on his very long career, which has spanned some 50 years, since he received his first drum set at the age of 13. Saddest of all for fans of Rush is that Peart (and his five-year-old daughter, Olivia) now considers himself to be a retired drummer:
“Lately, Olivia has been introducing me to new friends at school as ‘My dad — he’s a retired drummer.’ True to say – funny to hear. And it does not pain me to realise that, like all athletes, there comes a time to… take yourself out of the game. I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It’ (‘Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it’).”
It must be noted that Peart only refers to retiring as a full-time, touring drummer (he's now 63, after all), but there was no mention of whether he would still consider recording new songs as a part of Rush. However, his comments do not bode well for the future of the band.
