Celine Dion broke down in tears while singing 'All By Myself' in Las Vegas last night, at her first live performance since the death of her husband.
The singer's husband of 22 years, Rene Angelil, died last month at the age of 73 after a long battle with throat cancer. The couple had three children. His death - and, tragically, that of her brother Daniel two days later - led Dion to cancel a number of live shows in Las Vegas' Caesars Palace.
Last night, during her rescheduled performance in Las Vegas, she told the crowd, "Throughout my life, I only had eyes for my husband, who sat out here, night after night. People thought that I was looking at him actually but I didn't have to, I didn't need to, because every time I closed my eyes, I felt Rene on stage with me."
After making it through the first chorus of 'All By Myself', Dion broke down partway through the next refrain, put her hand to her head and stopped singing. She recovered in time to sing the final word, "anymore," before punching the air defiantly, and then walking off stage.
Later, as NME reports, she thanked the audience, saying, "I have to tell you that that was definitely the most difficult show that I have done in my whole life and I want to thank you for the support."
