Vinyl sales have been steadily rising over the past few years, much to everyone's delight, but is anyone actually listening to their records?

Tomorrow (16 April) is Record Store Day, where exclusive records from the likes of David Bowie, Nirvana, The Who and The Weekend are set to be released. Unfortunately, many of those records will never go near a turntable.

According to research published by the BBC, though sales are up by more than 60% this year, and are set to reach levels not seen since the late ‘80s, 41% of people who buy vinyl admit to owning a turntable they never use. A further 7% don’t even own one.

It seems, then, that the resurgence of vinyl is as much for aesthetic and nostalgic reasons as practical ones.

Meanwhile, David Bowie’s Blackstar has been revealed as the best-selling vinyl album of the past 12 months, with Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black at No.2, and The 1975’s I Like It When You Sleep... at No.3.
