Introducing: Meet rising Hartlepool-based indie types PLAZA

Tales of Strongbow, rugby, and most importantly, Middlesborough

PLAZA new band from Hartlepool underground band Blood Orange Photo:

The North East of England is hitting its stride with some of the greatest new bands from the UK coming from there at the moment and PLAZA stand out of the pack.

They seem to have come out of nowhere and word of mouth reccomendations are spreading like bush fire for the band who curiously label themselves, err... "post-indie".

Their first single, 'Totem', which clocks in at a mere two minutes,is immediately gratifying. It's gruff, sexy, short and certainly sweet, which has really set the tone for their later releases. Of these, 'Blood Orange' is a real stand out as it swirls and swells in its ethereal beauty, you can't help but think this band really are going to become something special. You can listen to it yourself below.

We sat down with them and got to know them a little more.

Who are Plaza?

Bradley, Matthew, William and Matthew.

What are Plaza?

Four best friends making music.

Where are Plaza?

We are from Hartlepool, North-East England.

When were Plaza formed?

We first started messing around in summer 2014 when we were bored, we had nothing to do in the summer and we just got together in Matthew’s summer house and worked on lots and lots of ideas that had built up over the months prior.

How are you feeling about your time in the studio currently?

We are all really proud of the outcome, we worked very hard and we feel like it has paid off, hopefully everyone else likes the new songs as much as we do.

Explain your sound:

Space-jazz mathematical post metal.

Are you excited about the new material?

Yeah for sure, as I previously said, we are all very proud of what we’ve got and we just want people to feel the same way.

What can we expect?

The songs feel a lot more true and personal to us, everything we’ve done before has just been about random events that have happened to us being young and stupid, from girls to sitting in my bedroom, drunk, bored and alone.

How was your first headline tour?

It was really fun, it went a lot better than we expected, lots of people turned out to the shows. Its surreal the impact that social media has on being in a band.

Favourite venue you have played?

This is a very hard one, there are so many great venues. I think id have to say Middlesbrough Empire, this was a very recent show but it’s a very prestigious venue, loads of huge bands and artists have played there over the years. The stage is big and the sound incredible. The architecture of the building is also great.

Where can we hear your music?

Spotify / iTunes / SoundCloud.

What’s a fun fact about the band?

Bradley and William used to play rugby together when we were younger, we used to down strongbow after the matches and get carried home by our parents.

You can also find Plaza on Facebook, and Twitter
