The Armstrongs are a musical family, it seems. Whilst Billie Joe Armstrong may not have passed down his pop-punk laurels to his offspring, he's definitely passed down some sort of songwriting abillity.
It's no secret that both Joey and Jakob Armstrong are musicians in their own right. The former being part of the fairly succesful American indie band, Swmrs, and the latter working under the alias of Jakob Danger.
Yet, their father has never really had the opportunity to share his love for their music, and not only that, but give some insight into their influences.
Armstrong confessed in an interview with Beats1: "I’m a fan of their music. I think Jacob is a great songwriter. It blew me away when he wrote 'King of the World', I was like wow. I didn’t know he had it in him. He’s not the most talkative guy in the world, which is like talk about virtue. He’s mixing it up and playing in these great punk venues."
"And then Swmrs, Joey is an unbelievable drummer, he really has honed in his craft. Just everyday he’s getting better and better and he loves anyone from [The Who drummer] Keith Moon to Questlove [of The Roots], some of his favourites. But like [Swmrs frontman] Cole Becker as a songwriter, I mean he’s an original. They just got weird. They came out totally rocking and sound like yeah its seamless. I wouldn't be talking about them right now. I’m really proud of them, I’m proud of both of them they’re great."
Whilst you can hear some nods to Pop-Punk in the sound of Joey Armstrong's band, Swmrs, the same can't be said for Jakob Danger.
In an interview with the NME, Danger admitted: "My two favourite bands are The Strokes and Beach Fossils – those are my two biggest influences. When it comes to the music and the guitar parts and bass, I like that style of music. I love the way The Strokes and Beach Fossils sound, so I wanted to see if I could write songs like that."
