Glasgow to host BBC 6 Music Festival

Depeche Mode, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Belle & Sebastian among the headliners

Some of the biggest names in Scottish music have been announced for this year’s BBC 6 Music Festival which this year takes place in numerous venues across Glasgow.

The details of the festival were announced on Lauren Laverne’s show earlier this morning and will take place March 22 – 26. More than 50 acts have been confirmed for the event. Previous BBC 6 Music Festivals have been hosted by the BBC in Bristol, Newcastle and Salford. This is the first time the festival has taken place north of the border.

Among the big Scottish names confirmed are The Jesus And Mary Chain, Edwin Collins, Belle & Sebastian, Emma Pollock, Honeyblood and The Pastels. King Creosote, James Yorkston, Anna Meredith, The Blue Nile singer Paul Buchanan and Sacred Paws are among the other Scottish acts confirmed for the festival.

Depeche Mode have been confirmed as the Sunday night headliners at the Barrowlands Ballroom on 25 March. This will be their first UK live date since 2013 will be the first time they’ve played the venue since 1984.

The festival line up is: Goldfrapp, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Belle & Sebastian, Anna Meredith, Bonobo, Ride, Cate Le Bon, The Shins, Future Islands, Sparks, Sleaford Mods, Songhoy Blues, Car Seat Headrest, Warpaint, Loyle Carner, Grandaddy, The Lemon Twigs, Honeyblood, DUDS, Dutch Uncles, Forest Swords, Gaika, Girl Ray, Haley Bonar, Julia Jacklin, Kadhja Bonet, Sacred Paws, Thundercat, and Whitney; with a DJ set from James Lavelle (UNKLE) on Sunday night at Barrowlands ahead of Depeche Mode.

Participating venues are: O2 Academy, Barrowland Ballroom and St Luke’s. The 6 Music Festival Late takes place at SWG3 on Saturday 25 March from 11pm-3am. It features DJ sets from Simian Mobile Disco, Nightwave, Optimo, Nan Kolè, Dusky, Rebecca Vasment, Lindstrøm, Jungle, MWX, K4CIE, Femme Fresh, Junglehussy, Andy Butler (Hercules & Love Affair), Happy Meals and 6 Music’s Nemone.

Also announced is the line-up for 6 Music Festival By Day - a celebration of live music, conversation, comedy and spoken word which takes place at Glasgow’s Tramway on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March from 11am till 5pm. Highlights include performances from Father John Misty, Edwyn Collins, Sinkane, Temples, Emma Pollock and The Wedding Present, plus appearances from former Sex Pistol John Lydon, Anna Meredith and Ian Rankin.
