'Some Kinda' is the highly acclaimed and much anticipated second release from US soul man Dwele. However if Dwele had been able to predict the rise and rise of Lemar, one can’t help but think he might have reconsidered his plan of musical attack...
But lets face it, we the British public can be a little fickle when it comes to music so will we also open up our hearts to this young soul artist from Detroit? Twenty-Six-year-old Andwele ‘Dwele’ Gardner first tinkled the ivories at the age of six. He then found his true passion for music after his father’s tragic death and by the age of ten Dwele (meaning ‘god has brought me’ in Swahili) was a self-taught multitalented musician. He draws his influences from hip-hop, soul and jazz, both modern and traditional.
A determining factor of a good album is when each track musically and lyrically complements each other. However with 'Some Kinda' Dwele appears to have got a little confused and has made each track sound the same as the one before. With bucket loads of enthusiasm, ample finger clicking and shed loads of cheesy lyrics it’s possible to put 'Some Kinda' on mute, come back 20 minutes later and not have missed a thing.
Dwele has described this album as a great way of creating a sexy mood, which is all very well if your definition of sexy is repetitive, indistinctive and generally bland...bin it.
