Interpol have today (30 January) shared a direct, visceral track that didn't make new album Marauder. Listen to it on Gigwise below.
The track conjures an adrenalised atmosphere thanks to pummelling rhythms and haunted lyrics said to be about a "sanguine and starry pair, buoyed and dashed alike by their own dreams and appetites."

The song, which centres around the lyric, "You and me / Make a fine mess" could well be about singer Paul Banks' personal relationship. In a press conference held in Mexico City to launch Marauder, he said "this record is where I feel touching on real things that have happened to me are exciting and evocative to write about." And given the sound - it similarly captures the feeling of seeing the band live with fully cranked backline - you can tell the song is culled from those album sessions which saw the band record straight to tape.
The speed at which they've followed up Marauder with new material comes as less of a surprise if we hark back to an interview Gigwise published in 2018. Speaking to guitarist Daniel Kessler had this to say about the songs that didn't make it on to the album:
"This was the hardest record to decide what made it on to the album and what didn’t,” he declares. “It was really hard record to sequence, and we had a pretty fruitful writing period so there’s a few songs that didn’t make it onto the record which I think hold their own and I hope resurface in the future.
"If someone had asked me at the start of this process which songs I thought would make it on to the record compared with what actually did, I’d have gotten it super wrong! We had so many choices here and we’re very much an albums band, so we tried to do what was right for the record and give it the most cohesive feel. We thought including another song might give it an energy that was missing and that’s how we eventually arrived at the thirteen songs which made the final cut. I think we made the right decisions in the end.”
Interpol have added new UK dates that leaves space for Glastonbury. Fingers crossed.
