An emotional storm

Grungy and gothic - Green Gardens are soundtracking existentialism. Playing out of Leeds as one of the staples of the scene, the four-piece share their latest things, ‘Things I Didn’t Do’.

Very much from the school of Alt-J, creating intricately layered tracks reminiscent of the An Awesome Wave era, Green Gardens already have a singular and instantly recognisable sound. Launching in with Nirvana-esque guitars before exploding into an art-rock, theatrical finale of harmonies, dark undertones and saxophones.

The newest band backed by EMI North, shining the spotlight outside of London for once, they’re signed with Come Play With Me, suggesting there’s a lot more to come from the band.

But for now, ‘Thing I Didn’t Do’ provides a lot to take in. Tackling grief, overwhelming anxiety and blistering regret - it’s an emotional storm.

Vocalist Chris says of the track, “Things I Didn’t Do’ was written almost as chaotically as it ended up sounding. I’d just finished writing another track but felt like I had so much more to say. I felt furious on behalf of the characters from these songs, and let this lie underneath the process of putting this song together. It’s driven by the crunching guitars, with the rest of the song falling into place around them. It’s the closest to outward aggression that we get on the record.”
