A hand-written manuscript of Bob Dylan's lyrics for the seminal track 'Like A Rolling Stone' has sold for a record-breaking $2.045million.

The lyrics went on sale in New York, with experts at Sotheby's rightfully describing the manuscript as 'the most significant piece of rock material to appear at auction'. The sheets were expected to sell for $1million, but went to an unidentified bidder for more than double.

The record for most expensive lyrics sold at auction was previously held by John Lennon's handwritten lyrics for 'A Day in the Life', the final track on the Beatles' classic 1967 album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - which sold for $1.2 million in 2010.

The sheets were by penned by Dylan in 1965. The legendary words are written in pencil on four small sheets of hotel stationery, featuring corrections, revisions and additions. See a photo of the sheets below.

Bob Dylan would later describe the track as 'the best song I ever wrote', so fans are likely to be reaching deep into their pockets to try and own a real piece of music history.

The BBC reports that Richard Austin, head of books and manuscripts at Sotheby's, New York, said:  "You can see how much work he put into it. There is a real feel of immediacy."

He contined: "Before the release of Like a Rolling Stone, music charts were overrun with short and sweet love songs, many clocking in at three minutes or less," said Mr Austin. "By defying convention with six and a half minutes of dark, brooding poetry, Dylan rewrote the rules for pop music."

The lyrics are being sold by a Californian friend a of Dylan, who bought them from him three years ago. They come with a letter from Dylan's lawyer, verifying its authenticity - as well as notes about the folk legend's life at the time.
