Johnny Marr appeared on BBC Radio 6 Music on Wednesday, during which he revealed a new song, 'The Trap', and lamented the effect talent shows are having on the way people sing.
The song follows the lead single, 'Easy Money', from Marr's forthcoming second solo album, Playland. You can listen to it at 53.09 here.
Speaking to Radcliffe and Maconie just before they played the song, Marr was asked how he approaches singing on his solo material: "I try and be subjective in the studio and remember that I have sat behind the mixing desk and recorded Morrissey and Liam Gallagher and Chrissie Hynde and all these people," he said, "So when I come to do my own vocals I just go 'Get on with it and get it right.'"
He continued: "There's a lot of singers who sound like they're singing in school assembly, it doesn't always have to be this earnest, exposing... I think it comes from the singing shows but I think some indie bands have got to watch it too. It comes from the singing shows and karaoke I think. Siouxsie Sioux didn't go for any of that."
Marr's new album, Playland, is due for release on 7 October.
