Despite Urban Outffiters' claims last week that they are the world's biggest record store for selling vinyl, Amazon actually beats them.
Urban Outffiters' Calvin Hollinger announced last week that the company told sold more vinyl records than any other store. The internet reacted with some degree of surprise, not least because Urban Outfitters vinyl selection sometimes feels about as authentic as the lookbook shot above. Although he quoted no actual figures, Hollinger stressed his company outsell Amazon, Insound and any retail record shop in the last year.
Unfortunately this turns out not to be strictly accurate. Billboard looked into the claim, asking labels distrubtors and wholesalers for their own result. Amazon was by far the biggest customer with 12.3% of the market share, with Urban Outfitters landing at second with an 8.1% market share.
As Consequence Of Sound reports, analysts have put Urban Outfitter success down to the fact they can list vinyl albums from around 100 sources without having to pay for the inventory themselves.
However regardless of who eventually emerges triumphant, it's good news for vinyl sales - sales in the US have increased by 41% over the last year.
