Green Day have announced that their long-time touring guitarist Jason White has been diagnosed with tonsil cancer.

The band released a statement on their official website breaking the news to fans, but reassuring them that doctors have determined his condition is treatable, and that White is expected to "make a full and speedy recovery."

The band said: "We have some news to report regarding our brother Jason White, and wanted you to hear it from us before word spread.

"Jason recently underwent a routine tonsillectomy, and his doctors discovered a treatable form of tonsil cancer. Thankfully they caught it early and he should make a full and speedy recovery. Please join us in sending him love and positive healing vibes during this time."

White joined Billie Joe Armstrong's side project, Pinhead Gunpowder, in the early nineties. He went on to join Green Day onstage in 1999 as their second guitarist, on the tour supporting Warning, and has been part of the line-up on all tours since.
