New band of the week is simple. We pick a band that barely anyone has heard of that we think the world should know about. This week Flasher have arrived with their video for ‘Destroy’ taken from their debut EP. And it’s a great introduction.
The band formed of long-time friends Taylor Mulitz (guitar, vocals), Daniel Saperstein (bass, vocals) and Emma Baker (drums, vocals) – merge from Washington, D.C’s revived DIY punk scene.
Flasher aren’t a straightforward punk band, though. On the opening track of their EP, ‘Tense’ they sound immersed in the post punk of Joy Division, the reverb-drenched lo-fi of C86 jangle pop, and 80s analog synth pop. But they give way to a spikier Wire/Public Image Ltd feel on the second track, 'All Over'. ‘Erase Myself’ has a spaciousness of Gang Of Four and ‘Throw It Away’ recalls Sonic Youth.
The single ‘Destroy', which you can watch the Drew Hagelin directed video to above, has a Peter Hook sounding bass line interspersed with glimmers of the catchy melodicism that was so natural to T-Rex or Bowie. It’s top stuff and they make for a potent live proespect.
Flasher are about to embark on US dates with White Lung, Swim Team and Parquet Courts, and will be heading to the UK for the first time next year (watch this space for dates!).
