Death Cab for Cutie are set to release their first album, Kintsugi, since the departure of band member Chris Walla.
Frontman Ben Gibbard told Rolling Stone, "This is an opportunity for the band to become something it could only become by losing a founding member." Chris Walla's influence is still present though - he inspired the title of the album, as well as contributing musically.
'Kintsugi' is the japanese practice of mending broken ceramics by making a feature of the repair. This is often done with resin that is mixed with precious metals. Bassist Nick Harmer explains that "the repair of it, the damage of it, is more important as part of the history of something than repairing it to its original state."
Gibbard concluded that he "would hope that as we move forward, people listen with as little prejudice as they can and try to hear the music for what it is and not what they want it to be."
Kintsugi will be released by Atlantic on 31 March.
