After many keen listeners pointed out the similarities between Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me' and Tom Petty's 'Won't Back Down', Petty has now been paid royalties for Smith's hit song.
Though entirely different in genre and style, the basic melody running through the two songs is decidedly similar, and Petty's lawyers reportedly took notice some months ago.
According to The Sun, after negotiations, Smith and Petty setled out of court in October, with details only emerging this weekend. Petty and singer-composer Jeff Lynne were awarded a 12.5% writing credit for the song.
