After losing the ‘Blurred Lines’ court case and being ordered to pay Marvin Gaye’s estate $7.4 million, Robin Thicke and Pharrell’s lawyer has confirmed that they will appeal the decision.
Howard E. King, the pair’s attorney, told FOX Business Network: “We owe it to song writers around the world to make sure this verdict doesn’t stand. My clients know that they wrote the song ‘Blurred Lines’ from their hearts and souls and no other source.”
“We are going to exercise every post trial remedy we have to make sure this verdict does not stand,” he continued. “We look at it as being in the seventh inning of a game that could go into extra innings.”
When asked if the Gaye estate will ever see any of the $7.4 million, he replied: “Not if I do my job correctly.”
Despite winning the court case, the Gaye estate is still not done fighting Thicke and Pharrell, as they are now looking to halt all future sales of ‘Blurred Lines’. The estate’s attorney Richard Busch told Rolling Stone that they plan to ask the court to enter an injunction prohibiting any further sales of the song, “unless and until we can reach an agreement with those guys on the other side about how future monies that are received will be shared. We'll be doing that in about a week or so.”
The trouble doesn’t end there for Pharrell, though. Speaking with ET, Nona Gaye, Marvin’s 40-year-old daughter said that she also hears a resemblance between Pharrell’s 2014 hit ‘Happy’ and her father’s song ‘Ain’t That Peculiar’.
"I'm not going to lie. I do think they sound alike," she said, but emphasized that they are “not in that space” to take any legal actions regarding that similarity just yet.
Nona is not the first person to notice similarities between the two songs, as there are already mash-ups of the two tracks online - you can listen to one below. "I heard the mash-ups -- but I didn't really need to hear them," Marvin’s ex-wife Janis said. "I know 'Ain't That Peculiar' and I've heard 'Happy.'"
