Kendrick Lamar appeared on Flying Lotus’ monthly BBC Radio 1 show to chat all about hip-hop and his profound new album To Pimp A Butterfly.
Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar are far from strangers, with the former producing the opening track to Lamar’s new album and the two joining forces on the track ‘Never Catch Me’ which appeared on Flying Lotus’ album You’re Dead!
This relationship of course lends itself to a very insightful interview. Speaking of the wide variety of influences on his new album, Lamar said: “It was me collecting every bit of music I’ve learned to live with and love since the day I was born. My father's influences from oldies to gangster rap. That was it for me and not being in fear to show these influences.”
When it came to speaking of other artist’s attitudes towards creating new music, Lamar was naturally ever-so-wise and said: "A lot of artists get to a point where we like to stay redundant, we like to stay compromising what we really want to do. And I said I wasn't going to do that on this album. I give that advise to any artist out there: Do what your heart tells you to do, because the rewards is even that much more better. I encourage you, the listener, to always put your heart over a number or a dollar sign’.
