The BBC has announced that Friday 5 June will be BBC Music Day, with events across the country.
Created in order to celebrate every kind of music, across communities and generations, it will be taking place in Belfast, Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hadrian’s Wall, Liverpool and Plymouth.
And it’s ambitious. There’ll be a Hadrian’s Wall of Sound, with a musical relay spanning 73 miles; a special educational needs and disability youth concert in Bristol, performing with custom built instruments using new assistive technology alongside The British Paraorchestra; and a duet crossing 7,000 miles from Cardiff.
Tom Jones, Lulu, Ricky Wilson, George Ezra, Rae Morris, Shlomo, Noah Stewart, Charles Hazlewood and Mark Ronson are all ambassadors of the day. They will be taking part in some way, either at the events, on the radio and TV programmes, or on social media.
“Some of us catalogue our life through music,” says Ricky Wilson. “And we all have a song we love and most of us have a song we love to hate! I’m supporting BBC Music Day because love it or loath it - music affects us all.”
There’s the chance to discover new music at the BBC Introducing events, and they are also calling for nominations for music champions who have made and continue to make a huge difference to people’s lives through music and their community. Nominations can be made here before 24 April.
And it’s free.
