3 July: On this day in 1973, David Bowie played his final show as the character of Ziggy Stardust at London's Hammersmith Odeon - killing off one of rock n' roll's true icons as he entered into the next of many guises.
The seminal breakthrough album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars would shape the world of music for the decade ahead and generations to come - but there was much more to Ziggy than a splash of make-up, a catsuit and a gimmick - Bowie became a whole new artist. It was one of the greatest transformations in music history, and he's not alone. Plenty of artists have adopted cool alter-egos over the years - splitting into their schizophrenic side to explore a whole new world of possibility (or just much about with a different name).
Either way, from Bowie and The Beatles to Arctic Monkeys and Lana Del Rey - here are the 13 coolest alter-egos in music.
