11 July: On this day in 1969, David Bowie released 'Space Oddity' - the track that turned him from a struggling obscurity in arguably the most inventive and influential artist of the past 45 years.
Most bands and artists stride along modestly thoughout their careers, being consistently brilliant but never really bothering the mainstream. Others have a flicker of fame and then fade into nothing.
