Ah throes of sexual frustration! It’s an almost universal theme, so no wonder Newcastle three-piece Freerunner can’t stop talking about it on their debut release. Backed by spiky guitars aplenty, lead singer Rob Coles explains “Cause I can’t get it, if you get it” on recent addition to the XFM playlist, ‘She Get It.’ But by Friday, and the second track, he’s changed his tune and protests that he “Don’t need it, don’t need it, don’t need it.” OK, so perhaps Gigwise is oversimplifying here, but it would be difficult to say these were imaginative lines. Despite its danceable beat, ‘She Get It’ lacks so much as a melody, and it’s the more laid back ‘Friday, Don’t Get It’ that’s the stronger of the two tracks here. Complete with computer game sound effects, it’s an impassioned, tuneful defence of staying in, of growing up and seeking something more once the romance of a kebab van night out has dried up. If they build on this start, Freerunner may find what they’re looking for.
