San Francisco trio Deerhoof have spent 13 years trying to carve themselves a niche in the Indie scene, and now on their 9th album - ‘Friend Opportunity’ they have caught the ears of critics. ‘Matchbook Seeks Maniac’ is a strange mix of a song. Vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki’s kooky vocal against a backdrop of rock guitars and organ is unusual enough but it’s her Japanese accent gives it an edge. In actual fact, the B-side ‘Makko Shoku’ works better, possibly because it being sung in Japanese (though MSM doesn’t exactly make sense), with Matsuzaki sounding more at home. It has an avant-garde feel, the organ part sounding like a demented hymn while guitars clash their way through. Refreshing in an offbeat way.
Released 26/11/07 on Kill Rock Stars.
