Hotly tipped by just about everyone at the end of 2013 and the beginning of this year as one of the best emerging bands of the moment, Circa Waves are a Liverpudlian indie quartet playing brazen guitar pop music, ready to make anyone bop along. But you wonder when standing in the Lexington tonight whether or not they’re ‘emerging’ anymore. They certainly seem more than fully dare I say, 'emerged' tonight, with no signs of uncertainty in the band or the audience tonight that they are wholly deserving of the hype.
Their brand of insanely infectious indie-rock sounds even more animated and jaunty live and songs such as ‘Stuck In My Teeth’ sees singer Keiran Shuddal so inspiringly chant “I’m a little too young with not enough time,” forcing the crowd into a state of pure excitement.
Songs like this that are played tonight prove that Circa Waves are playing refined and polished guitar music and nothing forays into grungy territory. But that does not mean that the music lacks energy. Whilst there are no moshpits, and the crowd tonight might not be shoving each other in each and every direction, they are of course more than happy to dance joyfully along making tonight an excellently ecstatic evening of guitar pop.
Sure, comparisons to The Strokes and The Libertines are not absurd and should be expected. But of course, there is nothing wrong with sounding this way. Because although these aforementioned bands have been around more than a decade, there is no denying that this dazzlingly rapid sound is full of unadulterated vitality. After all, despite the vast quantity of bands attempting to emulate this sound, no one is doing it better than Circa Waves in 2014.
