We Are (Still) The Mods

As The Who celebrate their fiftieth anniversary with a headline slot at the Isle of Wight Festival, we take a look at the latest round of bands inspired by Modparents Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.

The Moons
Formed six years ago by Andy Crofts, sometime keyboardist for none other than Paul Weller, The Moons have a more direct claim on the Mod legacy than most.

Indeed, their 2010 debut 'Life On Earth' was recorded at Weller's Black Barn studios and the man himself guested on 2012's 'Fables of History'.

But The Moons Mod cred goes way beyond contacts and haircuts; they've supported the mighty Ocean Colour Scene at the Royal Albert Hall, were handpicked to join the Smiths tribute in Manchester and their albums regularly crack the 30. Stay tuned for more.

The Spitfires
Cutting their teeth with support slots for The Specials, The Ordinary Boys and (oh yes) Paul Weller, The Spitfires are the latest outfit to channel the Mod influence.

Formed in 2012, the band quickly made a name for themselves with a run of energetic live shows that saw them rapdily compared with The Jam. Their 2015 debut LP - 'Response' - went top ten in both the Indie & Vinyl album charts.

Currently in the studio working on their second LP and with a new single - 'So Long' - out on April 1st, The Spitfires are all set to soar.

The Strypes
With their roots in the bluesier end of the Mod spectrum, The Strypes have won celebrity endorsements from a whole range of fellow feather cut sporters; Roger Daltrey, Miles Kane and even the notoriously hard to please Noel Gallagher.

And once again we see the hand of Weller at work; guitarist Josh McClorey played on 'Long Time' from the recent 'Saturns Pattern' album, in yet another ringing endorsement from the Mod aristocracy.

In 2013 their debut album 'Snapshot' went top five in the UK and made it to number two in their native Ireland. They went on to grab the top spot in their homeland two years later, with sophomore release 'Little Victories'.

Currently touring all round the world, The Strypes are well on their way to becoming stars.

The Sherlocks
Consisting of two pairs of brothers, The Sherlocks formed in 2010 over a shared love of The Beatles, Oasis and The Jam.

With their debut still incoming, The Sherlocks have yet to appear on a Paul Weller record but judging from their debut single - 'Live For The Moment' - it's probably only a matter of time.

'Live For The Moment' mines a familiar, timeless seam of small town isolation, an inspiration shared with so many of their heroes, with vocalist Kiaran Crook carrying the legacy in fine style.
