The Isle of Wight Festival is technically one of the country's oldest, having been around since 1968... But with a 32 year hiatus.
In 1970, the third ever IOW festival boasted a line-up that included The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Joni Mitchell. Over half a million people turned up for the festival, but only an estimated 50,000 actually bought a ticket.
That was the last IOW festival until 2002, when it was revived with great success. The 3 day festival now takes place in Newport, and is a slightly more organised affair.
