Axl Rose sent a letter to Indonesian President Joko Widodo to appeal for the release of Australian men who were part of the 'Bali Nine' drug smuggling gang.

The Guns 'n' Roses frontman explained that he felt 'touched' by their story.

"I as well as many others could easily have found ourselves in their unfortunate and unarguably self-inflicted position," he wrote.

Australian men Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were arrested in Indonesia in 2005 for being involved within the 'Bali Nine' drug smuggling gang. A battle for their release has been ongoing since their arrest 10 years ago, newly appointed President Joko Widodo refused clemency for drug smuggling and sentanced the eight of the nine members to death by firing squad.

Rose went on to say, "people make mistakes, sometimes horribly regrettable mistakes and sometimes more importantly people learn from their mistakes and make new choices, strive and succeed at true positive change. To not acknowledge and give such change the opportunity to prove its value would see in this case a greater crime than those originally committed."

Unfortunately Rose's appeal was not enough to save them, Chan and Sukumaran were shot by firing squad yesterday. You can read the full letter on Facebook.
