Steve Brookstein trended on Twitter yesterday after his tweet on the 7/7 bombings was deemed to be self-centred and insensitive.
The former X Factor winner, whose career has largely faded since his brief success a decade ago, sent the tweet on the tenth anniversary of the London terrorist bombings, during which 56 people were killed.
Brookstein wrote, "10 years ago I was heading home from New York and Barcelona after celebrating a No1 album. Totally oblivious to 7/7 attacks."
His decision to focus on his own No.1 album didn't go down particularly well.

@stevebrookstein How insensitive! I hope all the profits of this 'No1 album' were donated to charity in memory of the victims of #sevenseven

@stevebrookstein what's not 'good enough' is you are using a terrorism incident to promote yourself

. @stevebrookstein. Ironic. Because as all those folk were being blown apart they were totally oblivious to your phenomenal success.
— Philip Meeks (@PhilipMeeks) July 7, 2015
@stevebrookstein You should change your name after that tweet. Whattock Hunt is my suggestion.
— Mike (@inhoclocus) July 7, 2015
Brookstein was keen to defend himself though, with the help of a few loyal fans.
Ask yourself, did a tweet from a guy famous 10 yrs ago for just 15 min deserve national press exposure? - unless there is an agenda.
— Steve Brookstein (@stevebrookstein) July 7, 2015
That's because you have a brain. https://t.co/Tz868ZOSwO

But NONE of these 'outraged' moral high ground seekers would ever @ some of the Islamic tweeters today gloating about 7/7 @stevebrookstein
— Ⓓⓐⓝ⊸Ծ'K℈℈բբξ (@awesome_D) July 7, 2015
Anyone would have thought @stevebrookstein done the 7/7 bombings himself. Calm down idiots

Take note of all the media outlets talking about my tweet and ask how many mentioned my book regarding Max Clifford and historic abuse.
— Steve Brookstein (@stevebrookstein) July 7, 2015
Steve Brookstein published his autobiography, Getting Over The X, last year. In it, he discusses how Max Clifford threatened to "bury" him if he talked to the press about his split with Simon Cowell's label. There, we mentioned it.
