Kasabian and David Guetta gave headline sets fit for kings to open T in the Park at its new home of Strathallan Castle yesterday (10 July).
Both acts mirrored each other in terms of showmanship, with Guetta's commercial dance going down a storm akin to the downpour outside the Radio 1 tent. Inside, pyrotechnics boldened the furnace-like atmosphere, as Scotland's wildest dance fans lost themselves to the mass appeal of the Frenchman's crossover hits - from 'Titanium' to 'Memories'.
Over on the main stage, Leicester's favourite sons were letting off fireworks of their own, using a decade's worth of rock smashers to perfect headlining effect. Opener 'Bumblebee' was the ideal statement of intent, setting off a bulldozer that just kept demolishing.
Serge Pizzorno and Tom Meighan, now a formidable mosh pit forming partnership, reveled in goading the mayhem, Meighan's arms frequently spread wide in Christ-like satisfaction.
This was a night for the enjoyment of the familiar, 'Club Foot', 'Empire' and 'Ee-zeh' causing the sky to burn red with flares from the crowd. Night sky illuminated, Pizzorno launched into the slower balladry of 'Bow', but of new material, 'Treat' lived up to its name as the standout experimental attempt from last year's 48:13, building to euphoric climax.
"I'm speechless" splattered Meighan, never one normally lost for words. 'Fire' and debut album classic 'LSF' made sure T in the Park was very much in beautifully rain soaked full voice.
Check back with Gigwise later for a full day one round-up.
