Alex Turner appeared on Josh Homme's new Beats 1 radio show last night (29 July), and the pair took it in turns to read unfinished lyric ideas on their phones.
The Queens Of The Stone Age frontman recently began his show, named The Alligator Hour, on Apple Music's new Beats 1 radio channel. The latest episode aired yesterday evening and featured a special guest - Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner.
The pair have worked together several times in the past - Turner contributed vocals to QOTSA's latest album ...Like Clockwork, while Homme sang on 'Knee Socks' and produced Arctic Monkeys' third album Humbug.
The pair discussed their songwriting process during The Alligator Hour, with Homme noting, "What was interesting about the time we recorded together is that you would change lyrics but I never saw a pen or piece of paper."
"I have notebooks and do write things down, but I don't know how much sense it would make," Turner said. "Often it looks more like an algorithm by the time I'm finished. Somewhere between a spider diagram and a word cloud. By the time we record it, I really have a notepad there any more".
He added, "I had a bag stolen once with my notebook in it and that did horrify me. Even songs that are finished and get recorded, I still feel self-conscious lyrically. The idea that the drafts exist makes me uncomfortable."

The pair then took it in turns to read from their iPhone Notes, which they use to write "literature or fine writing based on trivial or mundane subject matters."
Turner's entries included, "It's my headache" and "John Lennon as a TV chef", while Homme's included, "Put glass in front of everything", and "Cockalorum," which, he explained, means "a little man who has an undue high opinion of himself."
Meanwhile, Homme's side-project with Jesse Hughes, Eagles Of Death Metal, recently announced details of their new album, Zipper Down.
