Despite the fact that it's regarded as one of the best albums of all time, Keith Richards has branded The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band "a mishmash of rubbish".
The legendary guitarist, who releases his first solo record in a whopping 23 years next month, was speaking to Esquire about his experiences at the height of fame - and the detrimental affect it may have had on his contemporaries.
He said: "A whole roomful of chicks yelling at you is not so shabby. Because the year before, nobody would look at you. But they talk about us – the Beatles, those chicks wore those guys out. They stopped touring in 1966 – they were done already. They were ready to go to India and shit."

Asked whether the Rolling Stones' recorded output will stand the test of time better than The Beatles, Richards said: "The Beatles sounded great when they were The Beatles. But there's not a lot of roots in that music. I think they got carried away. Why not? If you're the Beatles in the ’60s, you just get carried away – you forget what it is you wanted to do".
He probably should have stopped there, but he continued, "You're starting to do Sgt Pepper's.... some people think it's a genius album, but I think it's a mishmash of rubbish, kind of like ...Satanic Majesties.... If you can make a load of shit, so can we."
This follows the recent announcement that Keith Richards new solo album, Crosseyed Heart, will be released on 18 September.
Referring to the recording process, he said: "There’s nothing like walking into a studio and having absolutely no idea what you’re going to come out with on the other end."
