The N.W.A biopic, 'Straight Outta Compton', will not be shown in Compton theatres because there aren't any.
The film offers a first-hand look into the rise of the notorious hip-hop group but also the LA environment that moulded the artists. However, Compton locals will be unable to view the film in their city since Compton is without any movie theatres.
Speaking to CBS News, professor of sociology, Manuel Pastor explained: "It's a low income area, it's been heavily dis-invested in." He continued: "When you live in a community that doesn’t have that kind of retail, it’s a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued."
This may not be the case for long, however, developers are in talks of bringing an entertainment district to the city, including a 16-screen cinema.
In addition to this, N.W.A member and co-producer, Dr.Dre plans to donate royalties from his incredible new album Compton to create a new arts and entertainment center for children.
