Awesome news for Green Day fans, as the 'American Idiot' pop-punk heroes are set to storm back with a new single next week.

Earlier this year, the band teased fans with images of them hard at work in studio - after last year saw them release the huge documentary, Heart Like A Hand Grenade

Green Day's last set of albums was the opinion-splitting trilogy, Uno, Dos, Tre - released in 2012. Now, it looks like the wait for new material is finally over.

"Dear friends," wrote frontman Billie Joe Armstrong on Twitter. "Green Day is putting out a new single called "BANG BANG" August 11. stay tuned for more details.."

Last year, it emerged that the band had five new songs that were 'sounding amazing', according to the band's longtime producer Rob Cavallo

Then, Armstrong has opened up about his high hopes for the future

"There's definitely a great spirit going on," he said. "We've always been pretty charged up. Before we found any of this out, I had already written a few songs and everybody was really excited by them. And then we heard about the Hall of Fame, and we were just blown away. Yeah, I mean, we're going to take our time. We're not going to try and pull off some, like, victory lap over this because I definitely want the music to come from a real place and be inspired, not just because we got honoured or anything like that, but because we're honouring music.

"We want to work on them, and we want to make a great album."

Speaking of the new material already prepared, he added: "I've got, like, four or five songs right now. I'm gonna take it really slow. I'm just gonna make sure every moment is inspired and that we have something that's really special to us. And right now with the songs that we have, it's going in the right direction."

Rob Cavallo, who has produced all of the band's albums since Dookie and is also chairman of Warner Bros Records, has revealed how their new material is shaping up - saying that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is 'on top of his game'.
