Metallica will perform at this year's Grammy Awards ceremony, which take place in California next month.
The band are nominated on the 'Best Rock Song' category at the 59th annual event for their track 'Hardwired' taken from last year's comeback record Hardwired... To Self Destruct, but will also take to the stage for a special performance in front of a huge global audience.
"First, it was a total honor to be nominated, but now this?!!?" the band said in a statement. "We're beyond excited that we have been invited to perform on the 59th annual Grammy Awards telecast on Sunday, February 12, 2017."
The metal heroes previously performed at the event three years ago, alongside classical pianist Lang Lang for a special version of 1988's 'One'.
Interestingly, the band are nominated in 'Best Rock Song' category, instead of the expected 'Best Metal Performance'. Senior vice president of the awards told Ultimate Classic Rock that the nomination is positive, in terms of metal entering the mainstream: "To me, it’s a really good sign for metal – that they are having a wider appeal out of just the strictly metal community into the larger rock community.
“My take on that is they should be really happy that they are getting that broader recognition.”
Metallica had a hugely successful 2016, off the back of their comeback release. Five of their records featured in the top ten selling rock/metal albums of last year. The band have also hit the road of a huge world tour in support of the new album.
Gigwise were lucky enough to get a sneak peak at the new live set, at an intimate show at House of Vans back in November. Check out the review here.
The 59th Grammy Awards will take place Sunday 12 February.
