Blues music of the highest order

Fink has unveiled a video for a live session version of the song 'Boneyard', which is the lead single from his first ever pure blues album, Sunday Night Blues Club, Vol 1. Watch it first on Gigwise below.

The video is aptly filmed in a big old chapel at The Wedding crematorium as the lyrics in the song 'Boneyard' are all meditations on the location - Fink's studio is located just opposite.

The black and white shots work with the soulful, sombre emotion in the delivery and Fink has completely honed the blues, delivering with the passion and intensity that influences Lightnin' Slim and Howling Wolf would be proud of.

Of the take, which benefits from the rooms incredible natural reverb, Fink told Gigwise: "I wanted to make it authentic, it was just the one take. The energy, immediacy and speed was contrived to get the juice."

This stripped back session isn't too different to the album in its approach. Although there are more layers of instrumentation on the album - including a contribution from Colin Stetson - the technique was old school and authentic as he used one mic in the room and one amp throughout, and mostly did everything in one take.

Fink turning his hand to the blues is not a permanent switch but rather a passion project that was recorded in between tours. Ill-content to have a mediocre homage, Fink invested his heart and soul into his creation and over a period of two years used any time he could get to build up his skill. "Everywhere I went on tour I would go record shopping and find blues albums. I read loads and loads of books and watched every documentary I could," Fink told Gigwise.

The resulting output shows just what can be achieved when you completely inhabit what you’re doing as this is one of the finest newly recorded blues albums we've heard in a long time.

Fink’s Sunday Night Blues Club, Vol. 1 out 10 March 2017. Pre-order the album here.
