Alexandra Savior, famed for working closely with Alex Turner, has released the video to 'Mirage' taken from her forthcoming debut LP, Belladonna of Sadness (out via Columbia on 7 April)
'Mirage', directed by Irrum Khan, explores a performer battling different realisations of herself. Alexandra Savior plays herself, shy and reluctant to the stage, while haunted by her alter ego 'Anne-Marie' a brazen 1920s Hollywood vixen.
Of the shoot Khan says: "The idea came from when she was first signed to Columbia records aged 16, the label talked about creating a Lana Del Rey character out of her. She hated that idea. That's where the lines painting her teardrops on come from. That's who Anne Marie represents and what the song is really about. We filmed it last September around Los Angeles starting in a little bookshop in Eagle Rock and ending in a decrepit theatre in north Hollywood. Her album Belladonna of Sadness is out in March. The record is incredible!"
Khan's right, this is certainly one to add to the collection. This is the fourth cut after 'Shades', 'Mystery Girl', 'M.T.M.E.', to have already been released and each tune has a sultry cool that can't be ignored. 'Risk' remains a True Detective soundtrack song.
This above video is the only one so far that Savior has taken a backseat in the making of. 'Mystery Girl' was made with her talented filmmaker boyfriend Sam Kristofski, and 'M.T.M.E' and 'Shades' were self-directed.
Film is a very important aspect of Savior's art, and sound of movies inspires her music. When spoke with Gigwise at the end of 2016 she describes her style as "Feminist angst with a horror film feel." The charm of vintage horror definitely comes across in her sound as does a fine ear for melody and a knack for writing beautifully worded songs. No wonder Turner wanted to work with her.
