Dame Vera Lynn is outselling Swedish teen sensation Zara Larsson by almost two to one.
The one-time Forces Sweetheart who celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday, has just released a new album, the aptly titled Vera Lynn 100.
According to The Sun, her new album is now at number three in the UK midweek charts after shifting nearly 15,000 copies. Elsewhere, 19-year-old Larsson is at number six after selling 8,206 copies of So Good.
A source – who amazingly decided to keep him or herself anonymous instead of showing glowing pride in Dame Vera’s storming of the charts and her inspiration to those who fought to keep this country free from Nazi tyranny – told the tabloid:
“It's amazing she can compete with the biggest stars. It shows what Dame Vera's music means to the country.”
Even more amazingly – and rather brilliantly too – Dame Vera is also keeping Drake at bay. According to the Official Charts Company, the centenarian is keeping the hip-hop star at number four, despite his new Spotify record of hitting 10 billion streams.
Dame Vera’s chart placement means that she’s also beaten her own record of as the oldest living artist to reach the Top 20.
Sadly, the passing of the years suggests that there aren’t enough of Dame Vera Lynn’s fans around to dislodge Ed Sheeran from the top of the charts. And to think that a world war was fought for the likes of him.
Dame Vera Lynn 100th birthday was honoured by pupils from her old primary school – Brampton Primary School in Newham, east London – singing her wartime hits ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and ‘The White Cliffs Of Dover’.
Speaking via Skype, she told the schoolchildren: “I have very happy memories of my days at Brampton Park school and I do hope that you're happy there now. 'Thank you once again for your wishes and I wish you all the best. Bye-bye for now and stay healthy and enjoy yourselves.”
