George Michael has been laid to rest, three months after he unexpectedly died on Christmas day. He was 53-years-old.
A statement from his family confirmed that a “small, private ceremony” had taken place on Wednesday (March 29) was attended by “family and close friends”.
The full statement from Michael's family read: "We can confirm that the funeral of the singer George Michael took place today. Family and close friends gathered for the small, private ceremony to say goodbye to their beloved son, brother and friend.
"George Michael's family would like to thank his fans across the world for their many messages of love and support. We ask that the family's wish for privacy be respected so that they can continue to live their lives privately, away from any media intrusion."
George Michael first came to fame in the 1980s as one half of pop duo Wham! with partner Andrew Ridgeley. They sold more than 28m certified records worldwide from 1982-86.
After the amicable split, Michael pursued a hugely successful solo career and scored hits with such as Faith and Careless Whisper. He achieved seven UK solo number one singles including Jesus As A Child, and he also collaborated with soul legend Aretha Franklin and Elton John.
Paying tribute to his late partner at the Brits earlier this year, Andrew Ridgeley said: “We were two boys who shared a love of life-affirming music and a sense that we understood it.
"'Careless Whisper’ was the song that got us signed, showed his extraordinary talent and the song which launched his solo career.”
He added: "His is a legacy of unquestionable brilliance which will resonate years to come. I loved him and in turn, we, have been loved."
