If you like a singer with a Tom Waits gravel and songs that sound like they derive from trying to drink Oliver Reed under the table then Trevor Sensor's your man.
Sensor first made an impression at Gigwise with the a sublime song taken from his debut EP called 'When Martha Met Tammy', released via the Jagjaguawar label.
The vivid narrative recounting tales of debauchery in an American bar has an air of Johnny-Cash-esque romanticism to it, and fills our British imagination with the counter-cultural scenes you get from reading Bukowski. It portrayed Sensor as a man far richer in ideas and skill than his 22-years could suggest.
Sensor didn't spend long milking the aforementioned EP, though. He was off the live radar and in the studio with Foxygen's Jonathan Rado at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio in Chicago. It's been time well spent as the first fruit to emerge is the below single,'The Money Gets Bigger'. It features the crème-de-la-crème of American indie (Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek of Whitney) and sees the singer having honed his out put to its most impressive level yet.
Being surrounded by said musicians definitely helps. They all feel like trailblazers in an era of American indie that stands tall next to the much celebrated 2009 days of Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Fleet Foxes etc. Their contribution to Sensor's work makes for a far more expansive sound than before: a backing choir, ye olde violin sections, psych rock guitars, and spirited drumming all coming togther brilliantly for this epic, raw ballad.
Compared to his contemporaries Trevor Sensor is still an outsider. But once people get to grips with the new single, and the debut album, when it arrives, he'll be big. Get on this early. His voice and great songwriting will win a lot of hearts.
