Queen's Brian May has paid tribute to his late bandmate Freddie Mercury on what would have been his 65th birthday.
Mercury, widely regarded as one of the best frontmen of all time, died of bronchopneumonia brought on by AIDS on November 24 in 1991.
In a tribute on the Google blog, May said Mercury was a fearless “free spirit” and that, despite his death, “his presence seems more potent that ever”.
“Freddie made the last person at the back of the furthest stand in a stadium feel that he was connected,” May said.
“He gave people proof that a man could achieve his dreams—made them feel that through him they were overcoming their own shyness, and becoming the powerful figure of their ambitions. And he lived life to the full. He devoured life. He celebrated every minute.
“And, like a great comet, he left a luminous trail which will sparkle for many a generation to come.”
May also spoke about how he first met Mercury during his blog and paid tribute to his ability to resolve any troubles or disagreements within Queen.
Mercury's life has been celebrated in today's Google Doodle.
