US rap band Death Grips failed to turn up at last weekend's Lollapalooza festival, with reports initially claiming that fans smashed up their kit backstage after their no-show. Now however, it appears that it was all part of a stunt and the band never had any intention of performing.
Chicago venue the Bottom Lounge were forced to refund fans of the band after the 'show', which involved a projection of a suicide note and the band's album being played in full, but now it has been claimed that this was the plan - and that fans never wrecked any of their equipment. This also, was part of the stunt.
"It appears to us that despite having a signed contract, they never intended on performing last night and instead wanted to leave a room of disappointed fans," says Erin O'Neil, the marketing director of Bottom Lounge, in an interview with Chicago publication, DNAinfo.
She added that the fake suicide note, smashed kit and album playback was all the show was ever intended to be.

The band reporteldy planned to repeat the 'performance' at a show in Boston, although after furious feedback to the Lollapalooza incident, it seems unlikely that this will now happen.
The band famously fell out with their record label in 2012 when they leaked their own album online.
