BBC Radio 1 have denied claims that La Roux’s latest single was not chosen for its playlist because Elly Jackson is 'too old'.
Despite being only 26, Yesterday (28 July) The Sun reported that Jackson had "been deemed ‘elderly’ and shunted off to Radio 2” when her single did not make the cut for the youth station’s daytime playlist.
A spokesperson for the station has since disputed these claims, issuing a statement outlining that "Each track is considered for the playlist based on its musical merit and whether it is right for our target audience, with decisions made on a case-by-case basis.”
George Ergatoudis, head of music at Radio 1 and 1Xtra made a similar point in a recent interview with The Independent, arguing that certain artists are left off the playlist not because of their age, but due to the competition between tracks.
"We make some heart-rending decisions on records every week and we cannot avoid upsetting people.”
La Roux herself is yet to comment on the situation, though in recent weeks Radio 1 has been criticised by fellow popstar Lily Allen, who claimed “Nobody knows what the fuck they’re doing” when asked about the station in a recent interview.
La Roux’s long awaited second album ‘Trouble In Paradise’ is out now.
