Rufus Wainwright has said he would be more successful as an artist if he wasn’t open about his sexuality.

In an interview with The Times, the singer revealed feelings on his career to date, stating that if he wasn’t open about being gay he would be more popular.

Wainwright told the newspaper: "If I had been somewhat more strategic and less honest and gone with an asexual or bisexual persona, I think I would have been given a lot more opportunity and attention."

Nevertheless, the singer insisted he wasn’t bitter about the subject, and was incredibly grateful to the fans that have followed him so far.

He said: "I feel that my public, who have been with me a while now, are loyal and have been grateful and appreciative of my honesty"
