Trent Reznor has given a revealing interview concerning his creative process, with the musician revealing precisely why his songs 'aren't catchy'.

An acclaimed composer as well as a rock icon, Reznor spoke to CBS ahead of the release of Gone Girl, David Fincher's new film for which the Nine Inch Nails frontman composed the score.

Discussing his difference in writing style between projects, Reznor explained: "With Nine Inch Nails I realize that a lot of times my strategy of writing a pop song isn’t to start with a hook and mechanically try to make this product that’s catchy."

"It’s more that I start with a feeling or sometimes a visual, and then I try to dress that visual with sound, and a song comes out the other end. That’s probably why my songs aren’t that catchy."

In the past Reznor has scored films such as The Social Network and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Gone Girl is out now in UK cinemas.

Alongside his film work, this year saw Nine Inch Nails play a host of rare live shows, including a lenghty US tour which came to an end last month.
