To celebrate what would have been journalist Nellie Bly’s 151st birthday, today’s Google Doodle features an original song by Karen O titled ‘Nellie’. You can watch the video and listen to her song below.
As CNN reports, this is the first original song to be penned for a Google Doodle. The stop-motion animation was designed by artist Katy Wu, who worked on the project for two months. The animation, according to Wu, was inspired by Bly’s work as a pioneering journalist and adventurer during a time when women were expected to raise children and clean their homes.
Wu compared Bly with Karen O, saying that they are both bold, edgy, and daring. "If you see her onstage, she's daring in her own way," Wu told CNN. "She doesn't conform; she does what she wants." She also Tweeted that collaborating with Karen O was a dream come true.
My dream of creating art with @KarenO came true!! Love her music.

The Google Doodle video recreates Bly’s 72-day journey around the world in 1889 to beat Phileas Fogg, the fictional character in Jules Verne's ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’.
"She gave women a space in newspapers when they were generally preserved for men's perspectives," Wu said of Bly. "She gave women a voice in current events and media and dared to do a lot of things that women weren't generally allowed to do."
