Arcade Fire, Hozier, Beyonce, Meghan Trainor and Alicia Keys have all been shortlisted for a new award at the MTV EMAs, 'The Best Song with a Message'.
The award is intended to recognise those tracks that provoke discussion and a more open discourse on sexuality (and no, Jennifer Lopez's fesbian horrorshow 'Booty' does not count).
The award is sponsored by Someone Like Me, a partnership between the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and Durex. Selection will take place exclusively through hashtag voting across social media and closes on Thursday (6 November) at 5pm.
The tracks nominated include:
Arcade Fire - We Exist (#WeExistEMA)
Hozier - Take Me To Church (#TakeMeToChurchEMA)
Beyonce - Pretty Hurts (#PrettyHurtsEMA)
Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass (#AllAboutThatBassEMA)
Alicia Keys - We Are Here (#WeAreHereEMA)
Watch: Hozier perform 'Take Me To Church' for Gigwise below.
Although at first glance it appears that the award might have been devised to recognise Meghan Trainor's impressive chart run, the tracks picked do focus on a variety of issues. Take Me To The Church reflects on attitudes to homophobia, Arcade Fire deal with issues of sexual and gender discrimination, Alicia Keys tackled violence and both Beyonce and Meghan Trainor worked on issues of self image in a very different ways.
The MTV EMAs will take place on 9 November in Glasgow and will be the 20th anniversary of the award show. Nicki Minaj will host the evening at the Hydro SSE where Royal Blood, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Charli XCX are performing amongst others.
