Despite being the bookies' rank outsider compared to Beyonce, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, Beck's Morning Phase won Album Of The Year at the Grammys last night - prompting the wearisome wrath of Kanye West, and complete confusion on Twitter as to who Beck is.
After the singer was announced as the winner of arguably the evening's most prestigious award, Kanye West momentarily crashed the stage, in a callback to the infamous Taylor Swift incident in 2009. Thankfully, he decided to leave as soon as he'd arrived, and chose instead to badmouth Beck in interviews after the ceremony.
Perhaps more interesting was the sheer number of people who had no idea who Beck actually is - in fact, the hashtag #WhoIsBeck was one of the highest trending topics at one point, second only to #GRAMMYS.
I can't still deal with the fact that album of the year was given to an unknown flop artist! #whoisbeck #justiceforbeyonce

Goals for today: 1. Must not actually write angry email been formulating in my head since last night. 2. Must bother to find out #WhoIsBeck

A lot of people were keen to use their age as an excuse. Following the same logic, they must be equally unaware of The Beatles, Martin Luther King or Jesus.
Why are all the 60 year-olds upset I don't know who Beck is? I didn't listen to music in the 70s because I wasn't alive. #WhoIsBeck

In case you don't know either, Morning Phase was released in February 2014, as a "companion piece" to Beck's 2002 album Sea Change. It includes singles 'Blue Moon' and 'Waking Light'. It was also one of Gigwise's favourite albums of 2014.
