As the next round of the copyright trial for 'Blurred Lines' begins, it has been revealed just how much the 2013 hit song earned - and how much each of the three performers madee.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, $16,675,690 (£10,852,436) in profits were made, according to an accounting statement. The testimony apparently revealed that Thicke earned $5,658,214 of the profits, while $5,153,457 went to Williams and $704,774 went to T.I. The rest of the rest of the income went to the record companies, Interscope, UMG Distribution and Star Trak. A Universal Music executive is said to have testified that overhead costs on creating the track accounted for $6.9 million.
The copyright trial began after Marvin Gaye's estate accused Thicke and co. of copying the "feel and sound" of Gaye's 'Got To Give It Up', a song that Thicke had previously cited as an influence on 'Blurred Lines'.
The first round of the trial didn't go so well for Thicke, Williams and T.I., as the judge presiding over the case decided that the two songs were similar enough for the trial to proceed.
Last week, it was reported that in court, Robin Thicke performed a piano medley (featuring U2, The Beatles, Alphaville, Bob Marley and Michael Jacksonon) on his keyboard in an effort to demonstrate the frequency with which songs can share similar chords and melodies and to prove that his hit was significantly different to Marvin Gaye's song.
Pharrell Williams will be performing at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Friday 12 June 2015 as well as this year's Isle Of Wight Festival. For tickets see below.
